Coal Tar Distillation (Eiri-1092)

Coaltar is produced by the dry distillation of coal and is therefore a by product in the manufacture of coal gas. For a considerable time after the discovery of coal gas, the tar produced was considered merely an encumbrance and was used mainly as a pigment or fuel. The purification of coaltar is affected by distillation. The crude tar, which contains a considerable quantity of ammonia water is furst freed from this by gravitation. It is then transfered to the vertical stills, which are connected with a warm surrounded with water which can be cooled or warmed as occasion requires. Distillation of the fraction boiling above 270oC is usually completed under reduced pressure. The tar in the stills is kept in motion by mechanical stirring or by passing in a current of super heated steam.
