Cobalt Carbonate or Cobaltous Carbonate, basic is the cobalt carbonate of commerce. It is red - voilet - crystals which dissolve easily in inorganic and organic acid. Cobalt carbonate finds its versatile field of application viz in the preparation of other cobalt salts as pigment in the ceramic pottery enamelling etc. Generally prepared by the addition of an alkaline carbonate to a cabaltous salt solution eg. by adding sodium carbonate to a solution of cobatous acetate followed by filtration and drying. the mauve precipitate is a basic carbonate with an intermediate formula HCOCO3.Y CO(OH)2. ZH2. The material is insoluble in water. In view of the versatile uses of cobalt carbonate its demand is increasing.
