Among various kinds of adhesives Starch Based Adhesives constitute their paramount significance. These are generally clasified according to the processing they receive prior to compounding them into adhesives. These are vegetable adhesives. However there are innumerable variety of starch adhesives depending upon their origin and processing condition. Chemically starch has the same constitution as cellulose ie (C6H10O6) n. The size and shape of starch granules vary, depending upon their origin. Commercially starch is derived from many plants such as cassava or tapioca, corn or maize, sago, potato,wheat, sweet potato etc. Starch is a natural polymer. It is a polysaccharide abundantly available and is expensive and relatively stable in quality. As a polyhydroxy compound, starch yields adhesives with excellent affinity to polar substrates, such as cellulose. As a result of its orgin, structure, hydrophillic character and ease of dispersion starch is water sensitive and prone to attack by microorganisms. These limitations can be controlled by chemical modifications.
